Couple’s custody and divorce proceedings last more than 2 years

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are two of the biggest celebrities in the world. They have each starred in a number of blockbuster hits and have gained critical acclaim for their more serious work. However, in recent years North Carolina residents may be more familiar with the former couple because of the pair’s ongoing divorce and custody battles instead of their movie careers.

Jolie and Pitt married in 2014 but only two years later Jolie filed to end their union. Since then the parties have battled over how they should share custody of their kids, how they should settle their property disagreements, and a slew of other important family law issues.

Last year a judge determined a custody schedule that granted Jolie primary custody of their children but also scheduled time for Pitt to see them as well. The judge held that the former couple’s oldest child could decide how much and how often he visited with his dad but that the other five children would be bound to follow the plan set by the court.

Jolie and Pitt’s names were back in the news recently because a judge decided that their divorce trial could be bifurcated. Bifurcation allows for the settlement of some legal matters while others remain unresolved; for Jolie and Pitt, bifurcation allows them to return to their single statuses without having all of their custodial and financial decisions completed. As evident by this story, divorces and custody matters can literally take years to work out. North Carolina residents who are caught in lengthy family law battles may wish to discuss their ongoing cases with local divorce and child custody attorneys.
